Artsy Shark Great Week: Post #3 A Feature on Artsy Shark!

Great Blog about artists & the business of being an artist!

I’m pretty excited about it cause it’s one of my resolutions this year to get more exposure & press. I found out about Artsy Shark when another AMAZING felter was featured: Shana Kohnstamm! Check out her feature here. And stop by her website & give her some love here.

I’ll let you know when the Feature goes up!

It’s been a good week…

2013: K-I-S-S (keep it simple, stupid)

I am determined to make 2013 even better than 2012!

With this in mind, I think I need to get my business ducks in a row & sit down & focus on what I really want to achieve this year. My brain is constantly swirling with ideas & inspiration (most of the time) but I always feel overwhelmed & chaotic. I think needing to get a bit organized is the key to controlling it all.

Just a short list of some simple goals I want to accomplish this year:

Keep it Organized, Stupid

MP900341783 2013: K I S S (keep it simple, stupid)

Start now & it’ll be so much easier later on!

This includes everything from keeping the studio picked up, to keeping my business finances in order, to keeping an up-to-date calendar so I don’t forget deadlines (like I’m finishing up a piece for a competition this week & I thought the deadline was the 19th… but it’s the 9th… TOMORROW, AHHH!)

All of these things will help keep all the chaos at bay. When stuff is cluttered, my brain gets cluttered.

Keep it Exciting, Stupid

I THINK I CAN… I THINK I CAN… I KNOW I CAN…

Trying to stay focused and motivated is tough. My usual cycle is that I’m totally hung-ho for about a month, burn myself out, then I don’t do anything for a couple of weeks. Working on balancing life & work so I don’t burn-out is the main goal.

When you burn-out, it’s hard to force yourself to be innovative & creative. I’m always looking for my next BIG IDEA, but sometimes it’s okay to just play, experiment, loosen up. It can be an overwhelming task to constantly think you have to create a masterpiece every time.

Keep it Social, Stupid

MH900370902 2013: K I S S (keep it simple, stupid)

Get out there! Meet people & create relationships!

This has to do more with focusing on keeping myself & my art relevant. Networking, Marketing, Advertising, etc.

Getting more involved with the social-networks that I’m already apart of, building upon relationship I’ve made with many of you, & creating new ones online and… dun dun dun… REAL LIFE!!

Getting over my social phobias & meeting people in real life either by doing a show or two this winter, introducing myself to galleries, or just being out there in general rather than sitting at home in my pjs & wondering why no one is buying my art!

5 Things To Try When You Lose Your Creative MoJo…

Okay, so your going strong…
Working hard…
Then… POOF! It’s gone.

It happens to us all. I usually lose my creative motivation right after I’ve finished a big project. I think I actually work so hard to finish something, that I burn myself out.

So how do you get those creative juices flowing again?

Here are 5 thing that I do to get back into the creative groove.

1. Do Something Completely Different

Sometimes I like to start a crafty project that is completely UNRELATED to my business. It just gets your hands moving, is a nice break from the grind of your usual routine, & maybe it will inspire you to try something new & exciting.

Luckily it’s almost Christmas time & I have a bunch of X-Mas presents that I need to make!

2. Clean The House!

This one isn’t sexy, but how bad is it when you’d rather clean the house than work on a new project?

Cleaning is my ultimate procrastination activity, the last resort. But then I usually get some good jobs finished up. Try reorganizing your crafty stash, cleaning out that junk hall closet, or making some new fabric bins to store your bathroom stuff in.  The point is to keep active! (and you never know… you might find some random thing forgotten in the back of your junk drawer that inspires you!)

3. Make a LONG TERM To-Do List.

I keep an “Eventual To-Do List”. These are projects that aren’t really pressing, but that I need to get around to eventually. Like re-doing the Website, retaking photos of older pieces that need it, start a concept drawing for a sculpture that I’ve wanted to make, etc.

I keep a To-Do list everyday. This is especially great when I’m feeling unmotivated cause when I cross something off, I feel like I’ve accomplished something!!

4. Go Shopping, at least Window Shopping!

One thing I LOVE to do when I need some inspiration is to just “walk the aisles” at Art Supply Store, or Crafty Store, or Hardware Store. I think this is great, cause it gets you outta the house, and then if you just go with no specific idea of what you’re looking for, your open to new ideas!

You might find some random little washing machine part, or a new color of yarn, or a completely new material you want to try out that inspires you. You never know what might re-spark that creative fire!

5. TAKE A VACATION!

I think small business owners don’t give themselves enough of a break. I know I don’t. I feel guilty if I’m not spending my day doing something to promote the growth of my business. But we all need to take a step back sometimes!

This doesn’t have to be a full-out, tropical, week-long get away. It could also be just taking a DAY-CATION! Sometimes the Hubby & I just take the day & go to a new museum or head out of the city on a drive to the country. It’s hard to “let it go” for the day, but I keep learning this hard lesson over-and-over again…

Do you have any Tips that you like to do when you are feeling less-than-creative?

Where Do I Belong?

For the past month or so I’ve been thinking a lot about my business & where it fits into the giant world of “Art”. Am I an Etsian? Am I a Fine Artist? Where is the best place to market and sell my work? …etc…etc…etc…

I’ve been desperately trying to fit into the world of Etsy, the “DIY / Handmade Movement”. I do barely okay in that market, but is there a better place for me?

T-Rex with his funny “story”:
“It’s warm. It’s fuzzy. It goes Mooooo! This country bumpkin was found meandering happily through the arts and crafts fairs of Southern California. Don’t squeeze too hard though, you won’t be getting any milk out of this cow.”

I’ve tried a couple of Craft Shows (done okay) but mostly end up selling the tiny, cheap little felted odds&ends. I think I’ve really been advancing my sculpting in the last couple months & want to focus more on making & selling the larger character sculptures that I’m passionate about. These don’t do well on Etsy or at Craft Shows. People Ooh! and Ahh! at them, but I just don’t see it as the place to showcase & sell my work.

I’ve been torn & questioning where I need to be….

…and then…

We went to the Designer Con last weekend!!! Hubby & I had kind of talked about the Designer Toy market and if I could fit in there. Rather than “crafters”, maybe “collectors” would be more willing to fork out the cash to buy my awesome pieces!

Some cool Sculptures at Designers Con

Well, I think I’ve found my people!! The place was packed, so many buyers & vendors connecting over collectible toys. There was a variety of people there (spending BIG $$$) and a variety of creators there (most all, AMAZING!). I thought it might be focused most on Vinyl Toys, but there were also plenty of Plush artists, illustrators, and even a fellow FELTER!!! The demographic of people who collect designer toys encompasses all sorts from Art Collectors, to DIYers, to Comic Book Geeks. It’s official art movement name is “Low Brow Art”… LOVE IT!

That’s right! I met one of my interweb felting friends in REAL LIFE! I met Megan from Nonesuch Gardner! We had a great talk about the show, felting, wool, and “fitting in”. These were her people, and now I think they might be mine!!!

Top 3 Websites to Scope Out the Competition!

… I know who you are…
… and I’m always watching you…

I KID, I KID!! But recently I have been snooping around my favorite site & finding new & exciting needle felters & doll artists. I think I like to find new artists because it can be very inspiring to see what other people have going on, how they design & market themselves, and (I admit it) see how their business is doing compared to mine.

What can I do to improve my work / marketing / exposure / business? [/box]

I usually start out on these sites, check the profiles to find additional links to the artist’s websites or shops, then just keep clicking further & further down the rabbit hole till it’s like 3 hours later & I haven’t gotten anything productive done!

Top 3 Sites to Find New Artists!!

1. Flickr – Love this site. It’s the best to snoop around the various Flickr Groups to find interesting new people.
*Be sure to add links into your profile so I can click them!

2. Pinterest – I LOVE Pinterest! Not only can you find cool tutorials & DIY projects & Home Decor ideas & Yummy recipes, but you can also search for specific kinds of artists. I like to search for boards that contain the words “needle felt” or “art doll”. Then you can see Pins, go to the source, find the artist, click on another links…. another Rabbit Hole….

3. DeviantArt – This is my new place! I just signed up for an account last week & have been having fun finding some new artists. It’s a site dedicated solely to promoting & sharing art! I was hesitant to join before, but have been having fun. There are interest groups, you can “watch” artists for updates, and host your own page to get a bit more exposure!

‘Round the Web: Photo & Banner Sizes!

So I was going through and updating my Banners for a fun seasonal flare.

Halloween FB Banner Round the Web: Photo & Banner Sizes!

I discovered that pretty much every website that I need a banner for has a different size. I had to Google the sizes, and thought I’d share the important ones with you so you’d have them all in one place!

Most people don’t change this one, but I like to update for the season!

This is for the image that you’ll see cropped on you shop page. This is that first photo you upload to the item. I like to crop the image (before I upload it) to this size so that I have control over what Etsy might crop on it’s own.
